07/28/2010

-Ontario Claims Inter-Provincial Team Title-

Kingsville, Ont. (Golf Canada) – Sydnee Michaels shot a 1-under par 71 at Kingsville Golf & Country Club to maintain the lead for the second round of the 2010 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship.

Participating in her first Canadian golf championship, Michaels of Temecula, CA, has not been disappointed with what our courses have to offer.

“I was in Calgary ten days ago and was able to get out and play,” said Michaels. “Kingsville is quite nice, I’ve made a few mistakes, but I keep recovering well. Today was similar to yesterday, the conditions are great, and I’m playing solid.”

After finishing with a stellar 6-under par 66 yesterday, Michaels now sits at 137 (-7),  four strokes ahead of Danielle Kang of Thousand Oaks, CA, and Casie Cathrea of Livermore, CA, who are in a tie for second place  at 141 (-3).

Ontario claimed the Golf Canada Inter-Provincial Team Championship trophy, topping British Columbia by four strokes. Team Ontario was led by Jennifer Kirby of Paris, Ont., along with Delaney Howson of Newmarket, Ont., Michelle Lee of Toronto, Ont., and Brogan McKinnon of Mississauga, Ont. The team shot a two-day combined score of 446. British Columbia finished at 450 while Quebec finished five strokes behind in third with 455.

Cheryll Damphouse of Amherstberg, Ont., maintained her lead in the Mid-Amateur division with a 3-over par 75. Marie-Therese Torti of Candiac, Que., sits in second place after shooting a two-day total of 151 (+7).  Rounding out the top three are Canadians Evenlyne Lussier of Montreal, Que., and Christina Proteau of Port Alberni, B.C., tied for 3rd with a two-day total of 152 (+8).

Damphouse continues to maintain herlead  in the Mid-Masters division shooting three-over par 75; in second place isTorti with a two-day total of 151 (+7); and in third place Susan Podlosky of Alexandria, VA., with a two day total of 155 (+11).

With a two hour and two minute weather delay, the last few groups came off the course just as the sun set.

Play continues tomorrow with the third round starting at 7:30 a.m., while the fourth and final round of competition is set to begin Friday morning.

Live scoring from the Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur is available online. Players’ scores will be recorded and posted live to the internet at www.golfcanada.ca/Championships.
