What's On

'The Lyon Hunt'

The CGHF is excited to announce it has partnered with Early Renaissance Productions to begin developing a documentary film chronicling George S. Lyon’s gold medal victory at the 1904 Olympics.

Lyon is the only individual Olympic gold medalist in the history of golf. Born in 1858, Lyon was raised on his parents’ farm in Richmond, Ont. He would go on to become a successful insurance broker, founding Lyon & Butler Insurance Brokers, which is still operating in Woodbridge, Ont. He came to golf late in life, but was still a founding member of Lambton Golf Club, serving as club captain for 23 years.

Lyon stunned the sporting world in 1904 with his triumph over the heavily-favoured American champion, H. Chandler Egan, at Glen Echo Golf Club in St. Louis. Not only did Lyon have to best a player literally half his age (Egan was 23, Lyon was 46), he had to do so while competing in a grueling tournament that required twelve rounds to be played in six days.

The film will explore this and other stories in depth. It will look at the state and character of the sport of golf at the turn of the twentieth century, as well as examining the role of golf in the 1904 Olympic Games, including that of the Americans who won the ‘team’ medal competition. It will also document the search for Lyon’s gold medal, which has since been lost. Two of Canada’s premier golf writers—Rick Young of Score Magazine and Garry McKay of The Hamilton Spectator—will help us shape and script these tales.

The CGHF and Early Renaissance Productions plan to have the film completed by 2014, in time to air  prior to the much-anticipated return of golf to the Olympics in 2016. The film will be shared with other  golf associations, and will also be part of a traveling exhibit, with stops in North American and Europe.
If you have any artifacts, photographs or information that would aid in the production of the film, please contact Meggan at 905-849-9700, ext. 412 or mgardner@golfcanada.ca.
